DISTRO
CD'S:
Manifesto Jukebox
- "Strain" CD (Import $4)
Punk rock from Finland! Gravelly anger-tinged
vocals, jangly and urgent distortion-heavy guitars, power-surge undercurrents
of bass-thumping splendor, and sporadic deafening bursts of volcanic
percussion all intricately intermingle into one immense explosion of
unstoppable energy (think Husker Du, Leatherface, and an entire regiment
of Molotov cocktail-tossing seditionists). (Old School Kids Records)
My Precious
- "Everything So Far" CD (Import - $4)
20 blistering tracks of angry screamo / hardcore
from Signapore! Das Oath meets the Blood Brothers? Amazing! (Thrash
Steady Syndicate Records)
Onion
Flavored Rings - "Two Minutes Enlightenment" CD ($4)
OFR hails from San Francisco, and features former
members of CRIMPSHRINE, SHOTWELL, MIAMI, MONSULA, ALLERGIC TO BULLSHIT,
and FUNYONS. Steve Funyon's heartfelt, bitter and cynical songs of
doom, science and girls are backed up by a venerable rhythm section:
Paul Curran on bass (and backing vocals) and Erick Lyle (formerly know
as Iggy Scam) on the drums. What would be jangly folk-punk songs are
amplified and rock-ified into power-pop-punk bursts with a unique sound
that'll make you dance and sing along! (No Idea Records)
Open Hand
-
"Dream" CD ($2)
Emotive post-hardcore from California coming from ex-members
of Adamantium and Not Waving But Drowning. Very emotive singing, a bit of
screaming, with heavy driving rhythms and catchy grooves. This combines 2
of their self- released eps onto one cd. (Trustkill Records)
Opeth - "Damnation"
CD ($5)
"Damnation" is easily the most radical departure
of Opeth's career. The companion piece to the previous year's "Deliverance" set;
the album is the first to explore the group's non-heavy metal-based songwriting.
A haunting collection showcasing the 'mellower' side of this group, these
songs are full of melodic electric and acoustic guitars, the odd bit of piano
and mellotron, and background string arrangements. (Koch Records)
Piebald - "Rock
Revolution Will Not Be Televised" CD ($3)
Post-rock heavy-hitters PIEBALD follow-up their sales-gobbling
Venitian Blinds album with another load of ear-ringing power. Five brand
new songs jacked high on dueling guitars, ripping rhythm hooks and nasally,
off-key vocals. Features newly joined drummer ALEX GARCIA-RIVERA (SHELTER,
BETTER THAN A THOUSAND) for an even bigger sound. (Big Wheel Recreation Records)
Pettyfords,
The - "Aloha Means Goodbye" CD ($6)
"Total Mutant Pop-style pop-punk here- great stuff.
This sucker is Picks Page worthy- hot tunes 'n' harmonies. The Pettyfords
are really cool, the best MP-style pop-punk band from Hawaii (historically
one of the top pop-punk scenes in the US). After School Special-influenced
pop-punk that'll move your fat ass around the room. **THIS CD IS NOW OUT
OF PRINT!**(Whoa Oh Records)
Pink
Lincolns, The - "Background Check" CD ($8)
20-year career. 32 songs in nearly 80 minutes, this
CD is packed full of unreleased tracks, demos, covers and alternate mixes.
It also compiles most of the out of print compilations and vinyl singles.
Highly recommended... (Hazzard Records)
Pink
Lincolns, The - "No Lo Siento" CD ($8)
Another fine full length from this legendary Tampa, Florida
punk band! If you don't know who this is by now, you better ask somebody!(Hazzard
Records)
Poison the
Well - "Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder" Reissue CD ($3.50)
Reissue of the bands first release. Six emotional hardcore
songs with chugga chugga riffs! (Undecided Records)
Poison the Well
-
"Tear from the Red" CD ($3.50)
Poison the Well's delicate interludes nestled deep inside
the belly of bludgeoning slabs of devastatingly brutal metallic fury and
insightful lyrical prose delivered through harsh bellowing balanced by melodious
singing has set the standard for contemporary Metalcore bands the world over.
Not since the heyday of genre standard bearers Snapcase and more recently,
New Found Glory, has a band bubbled forth from the underground with the ability
to appeal to fans of emotive indie rock, hardcore pit monsters, diehard metal
heads, and the more artistically minded set alike. (Trustkill Records)
Postal
Service, The - "Give up" CD ($9.50)
That dueling duo-- indie heartthrob Ben Gibbard from
Death Cab for Cutie and Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello-- have completed work on
the debut full-length release from their side project The Postal Service.
Much like the songwriting process for Tamborello's other non-Dntel pop project,
Figurine, Give Up was created via tape exchanges through this fine nation's
potassium iodide-popping U.S. Postal Service. (Hence the name, smart guy.)
Jimmy sent rough music tracks to Ben; Ben bounced them right back with raw
vocal takes; Jimmy then cleaned any dirty spots and polished as he deemed
necessary. In fact, the only time the duo hooked up in person was during
the final vocal recordings and mixing phase. The album, titled Give Up, is
packed with ten beautifically glitched-out pop dramas. (Sub Pop Records)
Punchline
- "The Rewind" CD EP ($1)
A brand new EP from the Pennsylvania quartet of PJ CARUSO,
CHRIS FAFALIOS, STEVE SOBOSLAI and PAUL MENOTIADES. A four-track powerburst
of energetic punk rock, unloaded with ripping guitar lines, beautiful harmonies
and raw emotion. Signed by Fueled By Ramen after the label saw the band destroy
a Gainesville audience while touring Florida with the Unsung Zeros. (Fueled
By Ramen Records)
Rainer Maria
-
"Long Knives Drawn" CD ($6)
From the bombastic, gorgeous opening cut "Mystery
and Misery" to its closing track, Long Knives Drawn is comprised of
nine incendiary performances that hardly pause for breath. While so many
of their contemporaries have turned in limpid, mid-tempo third or fourth
efforts as they find themselves playing to a broader audience, Rainer Maria
have taken the opposite tack, delivering a fearless and ferocious rock album.
(Polyvinyl Records)
Reconstruct
/ Parkinson - "Split" CD (Import $4)
Grind / power violence from Signapore! (Broken Noise
Records)
Recover - "Self
Titled"
CD (Import $4)
The second full length from this old Singaporean band.
This full length retains the old school hardcore sound with plenty of breakdowns,
sing alongs, fingerpoints and mosh parts with a slight metallic feel. The
production is superb but not overly done. Lyrics deal with socio politcal
issues like the Bush administration, the UN, IMF and more. Comes in a tri
fold digipack. A classic. (Thrash Steady Syndicate)
Red Light
Sting - "Rub 'Em Down" CD ($4)
No wave meets Antioch Arrow with keyboards and plenty
of craziness. This is the exact sort of thing that one would expect from
some of the cool ‘n hip G.S.L. releases. Modern day no wave. Yow! Time
to party! (Sound Virus)
Red Light
Sting - "Our Love is Soaking in it" CD ($4)
Quirky yet catchy songs with lots of keyboards, time changes,
and just enough melody to make you want to dance. A sound that falls somewhere
between The Blood Brothers and The Rapture. (Sound Virus)
Refused - "The
Shape of Punk to Come" CD ($8)
Incredible finale to one of the best punk / hardcore bands
to date. HIGHLY recommended!(Epitaph / Burning Heart Records)
Reggie and
the Full Effect - "Promotional Copy" CD ($5)
The stupidly-anticipated new album from the not so super
secret side project of the band commonly referred to as THE GET UP KIDS.
Fourteen over-the-top songs of brain-melting and spine-aligning ultra-pop
hook. Massive like a belly full of gas. (Vagrant Records)
Ruhaeda - "Self
Titled" CD ($3)
Lightning quick to lots of melodic groove, and back again.
If it's on Level Plane, it's good! (Level Plane Records)
Saves the Day
- "Through Being Cool" CD ($5)
Widely regarded as one of the bands in "the scene," SAVES
THE DAY have grown from a fledgling start-up with one album to their credit
to a major force with another one. Showing much growth from their previous
Can't Slow Down CD, the band has taken their powerful sound and upgraded
it with better songwriting, and even better publicity people, leaving them
ready and willing to take it to the next level in the punk, indie and hardcore
rock communities. (Equal Vision Records)
Scatterbox
/ American Zero - "Split" CD ($2)
This is a re-issue of a CD that has been out of print
for about three years now. A split between northwest thrash punk band Scatterbox
and the now-defunct American Zero, this CD landmarks the only studio session
of American Zero. Ever. With 5 songs by each band, this is a great combination
of fast agressive punk rock by two great Northwest area bands. Members went
off to join Moral Crux, Scatterbox (one guy from American Zero) and The Lashes
(Sony). (Blackhouse Records)
Sean - "Bike
Messengers Aren't As Cool As They Think They Are" CD ($2)
Sometimes, less is more. Sean's singular grind rock
stands tall on the strength of only two pillars: keyboardist Luke Laplante
and drummer Mike Peterson. Named via a phonetic play on their former incarnation
as “Tion” (inspired by the prevalence of said suffix among death
metal bands, SuffocaTION, IncantaTION, etc.), Sean has followed up their
well-received first release (“Singers Ruin Perfectly Good Bands”)
with another contentiously titled EP: “Bike Messengers Aren’t
As Cool As They Think They Are." Features Members of Seattle horror
punk legends The Accused and Scary Bear. (Blackhouse Records)
Solaris - "Portraits
Noires" CD (Import $4)
Dark atmospheric post-rock from Latvia in the vein of
65 Days Of Static, Mogwai and Tesa. (Old School Kids Records)
Song Of Zarathustra
- "View From The High Tides" CD ($2)
SONG OF ZARATHUSTRA return with their long-awaited sophomore
release, A View From High Tides, clearly their strongest to date. Recorded
by Eric Olson in Minneapolis, MN, the band took more time in the studio to
master their craft and hone their sound to perfection. A View From High Tides
contains a more varied approach to songwriting than their debut - concentrating
on the entire band as a whole and their overall sound. The result is a pummeling
collision of guitar-driven fury. The overall effect comes closer to their
phenomenal live experience. Over the years, SONG OF ZARATHUSTRA has gone
through some lineup changes, and even toured with a drum machine for three
months! Don't worry, the band is back with their strongest lineup yet. (Troubleman
Unlimited)

get you to raise your fist and join the fight or knock you flat on your butt
if you you stand in the way. (Jade Tree Records)
Submission
Hold - "Sackcloth and Ashes" CD ($2.50)
The 2nd lp from Submission Hold. The recording is top
notch, and it really manages to capture the power, honesty, and sheer heart
of Submission Hold. These eight songs continue the Submission Hold progression
with even more complex, diverse, and yet very catchy songs; some fantastic
material. The booklet once again features art, writings, and lyrics in English,
German, Spanish and French. (Ebullition Records)
Teen

This Day Forward
- "Karios" CD ($3.50)
This Day Forward cannot be pigeonholed into any one
category of music. With each release, the band has been able to find it;'s
own legs and create a new experience in music, while still maintaining the
honesty and brutality that is helping TDF in becoming one of the most prominent
underground bands today. "Kairos" featured an aggressive blend
of hardcore, metal, and indie rock. The transition and combination of styles
seems to be an effortless task for TDF, and this record will be one of the
most talked about releases for 2002. (Eulogy Recordings)

Your Life - "There's No Turning Back" CD ($2)
Hardcore? Metal? The line for such distinctions has
long since been blurred so what you get is a new mix of music that borrows
equally from both. Metallic hardcore that sounds like it could have just
as well been molten in Sweden rather than the bands home terrain of Orange
County, CA. (Indecision Records)
